The 1900s saw the emergence of some of the greatest sportsmen of all time in a variety of disciplines. Records have been broken, records have been set, and historic moments have been created. Here is an overview of the greatest sportsmen of this era!!

Jim Thorpe (1888-1953) - Athletics and American football
Jim Thorpe is considered one of the greatest athletes of all time. He won gold medals at the 1912 Summer Olympics in the pentathlon and decathlon, and was also an accomplished American football player. In 1950, he was voted Athlete of the Century by the Associated Press!!
Babe Ruth (1895-1948) - Baseball
Babe Ruth is considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. During the 1900s he played for the Boston Red Sox before moving to the New York Yankees. He set several Major League Baseball records, including most home runs in a season!!
Georges Carpentier (1894-1975) - Boxing
Georges Carpentier was a French boxer who won the title of world boxing champion in 1920. He is known for his elegant style and for having participated in one of the most famous fights of all time against Jack Dempsey in 1921! !
Suzanne Lenglen (1899-1938) - Tennis
Suzanne Lenglen was a French tennis player who won 31 Grand Slam titles during her career. She is considered one of the greatest players of all time and revolutionized the game with her aggressive style of play!!
Johnny Weissmuller (1904-1984) - Swimming
Johnny Weissmuller was an American swimmer who won five gold medals at the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics. He is also known for playing the role of Tarzan in 1930s and 1940s movies!!
Paavo Nurmi (1897-1973) - Long-distance running
Paavo Nurmi was a Finnish long-distance runner who won nine Olympic gold medals and three silver medals during his career. He set several world records during the 1900s and is considered one of the greatest distance runners of all time!!
Ty Cobb (1886-1961) - Baseball
Ty Cobb was an American baseball player who played for the Detroit Tigers during the 1900s. He set several Major League Baseball records, including most career hits and most runs scored in career!!
Jack Johnson (1878-1946) - Boxing
Jack Johnson was an American boxer who won the world heavyweight boxing title in 1908. He was the first African American to win the title and also successfully defended his title against several white opponents, which caused racial tension at the time!!
René Lacoste (1904-1996) - Tennis
René Lacoste was a French tennis player who won seven Grand Slam titles during the 1920s and 1930s. He is also known for founding the Lacoste clothing brand, famous for its polo shirts with the crocodile logo!!
Johnny Loughlin (1891-1963) - Rugby League
Johnny Loughlin was an Australian Rugby League player who was selected in the Team of the Decade for the 1900s. He won several championships with his team, South Sydney Rabbitohs, and also represented Australia in several international competitions !!
